With beautiful views, amazing spring wildflowers, and a relatively short effort, this is one of the most popular hikes in the Gorge. On a good day, you can get a view of Mt. Hood and the Columbia River.
Join the Mazamas for a leisurely paced hike up Dog Mountain. The wildflowers may be out yet but hopefully the weather will be good and we'll be treated to good views of the Gorge. Since we'll be moving at a more restful pace compared to my usual hikes, this is a great hike to bring some training weight on if you're preparing for the climbing season or difficult backpacks.
We'll complete the loop clockwise with a total of 6 miles and 2800' of elevation gain, aiming to complete the loop in about 3-3.5 hours of moving time with about 15-20 minutes of break time throughout. Despite the fact that I describe the pace as "leisurely," be aware that Dog Mountain is a steep and strenuous hike at any pace and hikers should be prepared to maintain steady progress of roughly 1000 vertical feet every 40 minutes or less.
Meet for carpooling at the MMC at 2 PM, or at the trailhead at 3 PM.
