PEI offers multiple workshops to help teachers get students outdoors

Guest post from our partners at PEI (Pacific Education Institute)

For the third year in a row, Pacific Education Institute (PEI) is offering an introductory series of virtual workshops for K-12 and nonformal educators. The workshops serve as an entry point for teachers to learn more about the tools and resources available to engage their students in outdoor-based learning.

In February these include:

  • February 7: Introduction to Designing High-Impact Field Experiences (HIFEs)

  • February 10: Introduction to FieldSTEM for Nonformal Educators (bilingual)

  • February 13: Introduction to English Language Arts Performance Tasks

  • February 22: Introduction to Field Investigations

  • February 27: Introduction to Fostering Outdoor Observation Skills

Participants at the 2023 intro workshops appreciated the connection to resources and the opportunity to collaborate and plan with other educators. “I loved the direct instruction followed by practice and planning,” said one. “We had quite a few people from our district attending so I am excited to hear how they plan to implement their learning.”

“[This workshop] presented real-world issues in the science/mathematical area that allow students to practice needed skills that can align with state standards,” said another. “This contributed to my professional growth in showing me a fantastic way to engage students in science class as well as help prepare them for their SBAC testing in a way that will excite them.”

HIFEs help teachers turn ‘field trips’ into ‘field experiences’ by adding context and depth to what they’re learning and engaging community partners in the process; FieldSTEM is PEI’s signature education model designed to enhance learning by incorporating the outdoors; performance tasks are mini-research units that align STEM and English Language Arts (ELA) or math in accordance with Next Generation Science and Common Core standards. Field Investigations provides tools that allow students to become scientists on their school grounds or any nearby green space and Fostering Outdoor Observation Skills (FOOS) is one of PEI’s most popular subjects because it integrates so well with ELA, math and other subjects.
